The New Housing Racism: Not Just For the History Books

Economists are no fans of public housing. To quote Milton Friedman: "One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results." Public housing costs more than twice as much as market housing, it is a bad deal. Not only that, concentrating poverty produces worse social outcomes for residents and reinforces the cycle of poverty. Economists favor vouchers, which cost much less and allow people to live anywhere they want, helping to break that cycle.

There is one flaw in this. Despite clearly violating the Fair Housing Act, what if landlords and cities refuse to rent to people paying with vouchers? In 26 DFW cities, zero apartment complexes accept vouchers. And recently one Denton County suburb had an HOA pass a rule which will fine homeowners $300/week for renting to people paying with a voucher.

School boards may be moving away from teaching about past systemic racism such as slavery and redlining, saying "the past is past," but what about teaching it as a current event?

The house next door to us has had voucher tenants on and off for a decade. Never had any problems with them at all. It's just sad to see that 105 years after the Supreme Court ruled racial zoning ordinances violated the constitution that this battle is still not won.
